Director Peter Baldwin passes away

Los Angeles, Nov 25 (PTI) Emmy Award-winning director Peter Baldwin has died. He was 86.

Baldwin passed away on November 19 at home in California's Pebble Beach.

The news of his demise was announced on Facebook by children - daughter Eleonora Baldwin and son Drew Baldwin, CEO of Tubefilter and creator of the Streamy Awards.

Born in Winnetka, Illinois, Baldwin was discovered by a Hollywood talent scout in his senior year at Stanford.

According to Variety, he started out as an actor, who went on to become one of Paramount's "Golden Circle of Newcomers" and featured in films including "Stalag 17", "Little Boy Lost" and Cecil B DeMille's "The Ten Commandments".

After serving the Navy for three years, Baldwin made a comeback through appearances in "The Tin Star" and "Teacher's Pet" with Clark Gable and Doris Day.

He trekked with Julie Harris in the play 'The Warm Peninsula' and then moved to Italy, where he starred in films by Robert Rossellini, Dino Risi and Francesco Rosi.

Baldwin assisted director Vittorio De Sica on "Woman Times Seven" and "A Place for Lovers". He won the first prize at the Venice Film Festival for "Some Sort of Cage", a docudrama about Synanon House, which he wrote, produced and directed.

After his return to the United States, he was hired by "Dick Van Dyke Show" producer Sheldon Leonard.

Baldwin then directed hundreds of episodes of popular shows such as "The Andy Griffith Show", "The Partridge Family", "Mary Tyler Moore", "The Brady Bunch", "Sanford and Son", "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch", "Full House", among others.

He won an Emmy in 1988 for the TV series "The Wonder Years".

Baldwin also helmed comedy movie "Meet Wally Sparks", which featured Rodney Dangerfield and produced the HBO movie "As Summers Die" starring Bette Davis, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Scott Glenn.

His last directing credit was an episode of the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens" (2002).

Baldwin is also survived by wife, Terry, another daughter Amy Anderson, five grandchildren, and three great- grandchildren.
