Brain dead boy's heart gives 4-yr-old a new lease of life

Thane (Maharashtra) [India], June 24 :
A live heart was transported from Aurangabad to Mumbai, covering a distance of 323.5 kilometres, in one hour and thirty-four minutes, which was later successfully transplanted into a 4-year-old girl.

The four-year-old girl, named Dhanashree from Jalna, was suffering from the respiratory disorder. Only 15 percent of the heart of the girl was functional and doctors at the Fortis Hospital recommended a heart transplant.

However, the difficulty was to find a heart and meet the cost of around 25 lakhs for the transplant Later, the money was arranged from the Chief Minister Medical Assistance Fund of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

"Organ donation is very important. It takes a lot of courage to donate an organ of a person. It is important to increase its awareness so that a life can be saved," said Dr Narayani, Zonal Chairperson of Fortis Hospital.
